Faith: A Love Story That Was Bound To Happen

I couldn’t stop thinking about what was happening with Faith, since there are many things i couldn’t quite comprehend at first…. so i thought about it constantly. I realised that I hadn’t quite state my thoughts clearly in my previous post, so many couldn’t understand. Sorry for that post… Cause i wasn’t clear about it either then. Let me say what’s clearly in my mind now…. Well, even though these probably aren’t right.. All that i am sure of now is that the time travel where Young kidnaps her, was bound to happen… And Eun Soo was bound to love Choi Young. Their love story, was bound to happen. That’s all i’m sure of at the moment. The rest are all just speculations. This post is rather lengthy, but basically, the first part is on the time traveling part, the second is just on my love for Faith. Anyway, I’ll go straight to the point now, my speculations. I sincerely hope i won’t be confusing anyone with this post.

Eunsoo’s love is great. Why? Like what i said before, Eunsoo traveled a few times, possibly many times to the past. I failed to mention this clearly in my previous post, taking only one example of her re-time traveling. Let me state this clearly now. She travels quite a few times. This is because her diary records every time Young “dies”. The time where Lady Choi stops her to get her to turn back and save Young.. she probably did not turn back the first time she encountered this situation in her possibly first time travel… Let’s name this time A… So she possibly did not turn back to save him in time, and hence in time A in 1351 Goryeo, he died. Because she fell for Young, she tries to travel to a time before Goryeo (Let’s name this BEFORE TIME A) and write something to warn Eunsoo in the future, to save Young. So this time, when she wrote her diary in BEFORE TIME A, she only wrote about having to save Young when Lady Choi asked her to go back and save Young. So her diary(Hwata’s diary) written in BEFORE TIME A, only had the writing to get her to save Young when Lady Choi came to ask her to save Young. And because time is sequential, technically when she’s in BEFORE TIME A, her time travel to 1351 hasn’t occurred. So now, because she left Hwata’s relics in BEFORE TIME A, everything is changed. Anything can change history, an extra existence of a piece of stone in the past, can change history. So Hwata’s relics in BEFORE TIME A … changes history. Leading to a different story from TIME A in 1351, in the future after BEFORE TIME A. So now, after “Hwata’s relics” was left behind, everything is changed. Everything is resetted. So technically, when she’s back in 2012, she will not remember anything of her time travel, because she changed history by leaving Hwata’s diary, and that means, everything after BEFORE TIME A will be different now. This is because anything and everything can change history. Imagine, one extra stone in history can actually make Young trip and fall off a cliff (Exaggeration here, but that’s how it is). So now with the diary, everything is different, the events in the future(including 1351 in Goryeo) will now be different.

So now, we’re back to square one, Eunsoo time travels to 1351 after Young kidnaps her. You may ask, wouldn’t Eunsoo remember what happened? No, she doesn’t, because her previous time travels to 1351 Goryeo technically is nonexistent because she changed history by leaving Hwata’s relics/her diary behind. Confusing? Because her diary technically can change many events of history, like my stone example earlier, just one stone can make a difference. So technically, her time travels before this is nonexistent. You might think that, okay her time A 1351 time travel is nonexistent, but she should remember BEFORE TIME A? Nope, she wouldn’t because that time travel was not meant to be, it was not supposed to occur, she wanted it, so that she could change history. And so, her going there(which was not meant to happen), was already changing history. So because she changed history, it affects every event after BEFORE TIME A… Including the 1351 Goryeo time travel, and her life in the current century, 2012… So because she changed history, everything after BEFORE TIME A will be different from before, and so the previous situation before she changed history automatically becomes NONEXISTENT. Why she remembers about time A when she travels to BEFORE TIME B is because she technically hasn’t changed history yet… She only changes history when she goes into BEFORE TIME A, so only after that time travel, she would not remember anything about time traveling. So if she tries.. or rather when she tries to return to 2012 from BEFORE TIME A, everything is nonexistent, cause everything is changed. Everything starts from point 0…. So Eunsoo’s life story starts from when she’s born again… all the way till the age of 33 when Young kidnaps her. So the time travel will occur again, because it technically hasn’t occurred and her time travel, time A, again i repeat, is nonexistent.

Okay, so back to what i was saying, we’re back to square one. Young kidnaps her in 2012, and they go back in time to 1351. And by fate, she comes to fall for Young. This is because in every time travel to Goryeo, she was bound to fall for Young. Let’s call this time frame now, time B. In time B in 1351 Goryeo, Eunsoo’s diary/Hwata’s relics exists now, because Eunsoo left it when she was in BEFORE TIME A…. But in her diary this time, there’s only the part that asks her to save Young when Lady Choi comes to ask her to do so. So she sees the diary and she did manage to save him this time in time B, by rushing back after Lady Choi called her, and putting the knife at her neck, threatening to kill herself in front of Kicheol and Young… So in this time, time B, after she saves Choi Young, everything went smoothly to the time at the end of episode 16, where she saw the chrysanthemum flowers, and when Deokki broke the vase. Possibly, in time B, Choi Young dies here due to a trap set by DH/KC. So Choi Young dies here in time B… So Eunsoo, who fell for Young again in time B, tries to travel back to a time before Goryeo, and writes in the diary to warn Eunsoo to save Young for two events now. One is the time where Lady Choi calls her to turn back (She knows this one because it is stated in the diary she read, even though he didn’t die because of this situation in time B), and the second time is where Deokki breaks the glass, and she sees the chrysanthemum flowers (She knows this because he died in time B due to this). I shall call this time she traveled to before 1351 Goryeo, BEFORE TIME B. So again, with the new changes she made, with more details in her diary in BEFORE TIME B, everything is put to reset. But time is sequential, so Eunsoo’s time travel(both time A and time B) to Goryeo technically hasn’t happened and is non existent…

And so, back to square one again, Eunsoo doesn’t remember anything, because her previous time travels to 1351 Goryeo before this technically hasn’t happened, and is kind of erased because she changed history, and is therefore non-existent. So she travels to Goryeo after Young kidnaps her. And after falling for Young again, and seeing the diary… Again, she managed to save him… and everything goes on… Until Choi Young possibly dies again. We don’t know how many time he dies, it will probably be stated in Eunsoo’s diary. So… She will possibly save him several times after this (through several time travels, going back and forth in time, writing more in the diary every time she goes to “BEFORETIME”, meaning before the 1351 Goryeo time travel)… and he eventually lives till 1388. Now, every time she goes back and saves Young, the history she “knows” is changed. The first time she traveled, Young according to the history records in 2012, dies in time A. The second time she traveled, Young, according to history records in 2012, dies in time B… and this goes on. So because the history we know today, says that Choi Young dies in 1388, this is possibly her LAST time travel, because the history Eunsoo knows in the drama today, states that Young lives a very very very long time (possibly what we know today, till 1388).

I’m sure there’s a big flaw to what I’m thinking now though, some things just don’t make sense. Anyone with better theories??? I really want to read them to clear the confusion in my brain. But well, i shan’t think anymore. I will leave it for Writer Song to tell us, because i’m confident she knows how to resolve this, or she wouldn’t have given us a straight “You will go to somewhere for 1 year” by the fortune teller in episode one.

Anyway, if what i am thinking now is correct…. I have many questions. See, if she were to time travel again and again for Young, what will stop her this time? What stops her from saving him from dying in Yi Seong Gye’s hands in 1388? I don’t believe she thinks that 72 years is a long enough time for him to live? I mean it is long, but no one would ever want to let their love one die, if they know a method to keep him alive. Whatever the case, Eunsoo was bound to love him… And their love was bound to happen.

Therefore, Eunsoo’s love is great.

Now, to my love for this show. I really love this couple now… Surprisingly, i felt nothing for them at the beginning of this drama. Now, i love them to bits. This is possibly Lee Min Ho‘s best pairing ever, and my favourite drama of his. I love this pair so much, that i don’t even need a kiss scene from them. Anyway, too much concentration on the love story sometime spoils the direction of the drama, but that’s not the point anyway. For me…. Well, what I love about Sageuks is the pure love they always present to us. We don’t need things like deep kisses.. Well at least for me. I like the simple scenes of the couple holding hands, hugging each other, leaning on each other, staring at each other, as if each other is the only one that matters, and that they are the only ones in the world. Faith’s couple gave me all these. From Choi Young and Eun Soo, to No Guk and Gong Min, we had that all. Of course, lesser with Gong Min-No Guk, but these little scenes like Noguk holding his arm, giving him reassurance… This simple scene pretty much owns other couples having kiss scenes in other dramas. As long as their love is pretty to us, whatever they give us, just the simplest form of showing love, already leaves us contented. I don’t mind one or two kiss scenes in the future episodes though. Not too much though. Anyway, yes, i love my Faith couples so much.

As you can see, the drama is leaving me crazy. Help!!!! Is monday here already? Are we all dying yet, Faith fans? Just read Joonni‘s translation of the preview for episode 17 not too long ago. I believe I’m pleased with that preview. Both Young and Ki Cheol will probably go crazy with Eunsoo being with DeukHeung, and who knows, they’ll team up! Yay!!! You see, i’m kinda a fan of Ki Cheol, his so adorable. I don’t think i hate anyone in this show honestly. Even Deuk Heung is likeable though i hate him at times. But hey, back in those days, for men, its all about wealth and power. So well, we can’t blame him. Ha, what an excuse. But yeah, i love this drama to bits. Not to forget, my woodalchi and suribang kids, I love them all. Daeman, Choongsuk, Deokman, Dolbae, Juseok, Jiho and Jihoo, i love you all! (I didn’t miss out any of their lovely names right?)

When a drama stays on your mind, you know, you’re quite possibly, insane. Anyway, my love for Faith is different from other dramas. My craze for many other dramas had me being crazy over other things instead of the story itself. For example, the cast, the couple, the chemistry, the behind the screen chemistry and whatsoever. And my fangirling time for the drama got me watching the BTS, saving pictures… saying “inserts name” is so cute… But for Faith… It’s different.

I barely watch any BTS unless it appears in front of my eyes without me searching for it… I save pictures and stalk forums only when I’m really bored. Instead, my fan dedication time for the drama is instead used for a rewatch of the episodes. Yes, i honestly can’t remember the last time i actually rewatched a current airing drama in full while it was still airing. I don’t think i ever did that honestly. Most of the time, for my craze of other dramas, when i rewatched, I just skipped to the interesting parts, or the main couple parts and so on. But for Faith, i rewatched the episodes in full, because every time i rewatch it, i realise new things, and my thoughts for a certain part of the plot changes as well. In fact, Faith is indeed one of the first few dramas in a long while that i haven’t press the fastforward button (With the exception of the first few episodes, in which i watched in full on a rewatch). Faith, you can carry on with your flawed editing and all, i can care less for that as long as you continue with the beautifully written story. Have i mentioned how much i love the title, Faith? In Korean, the title is written as 신의. 신의 can have two different meanings. In traditional Korean, it can be written as 信義 (meaning Faith), and 神醫 (meaning Great Doctor). Originally, they wanted the title to be 神醫, which means, The Great Doctor, but they eventually changed it to 信義 … which means, Faith. And we can clearly see how Faith is the basic foundation of the show…. It is the faith from one character to another that directs the show beautifully, making us, as the viewers, have faith in the show. What a meaningful name. I swear i sound really biased now, but well, I love Faith. Anyway, that’s Faith for me now.

Before i end this post, let me thank you all(From DC, Tumblr, etc.) for all the lovely graphics on this post. I obviously don’t have the skills to edit them like that. Please forgive me cause i can’t remember who in particular i stole the artworks from. Let me know if i stole them from you. Anyway, i hope i didn’t confuse you guys with the post. Everything here is just a speculation, it most probably ain’t correct. Even if it is, it did only be partially correct. But well, good dramas arises your interest, and makes you think and speculate… So well, since i kept thinking, i figured i shall share my thoughts. Hope to see more of everyone’s speculations as well!

By the way, i just wanted to add. I don’t think Eunsoo is Hwata… She’s probably just someone that came after Hwata. Remember how Jo said in episode one that Hwata sends a disciple over here every 300 years? The BEFORE TIME i’m talking about, is probably 3X300 years after Hwata’s arrival… Which is 900 years after Hwata’s arrival. And therefore, probably 100 years before 1351, because Hwata came 1000 years ago… Maybe that explains Eunsoo’s thoughts on the diary only being 100 years old with the highlighted parts in the diary?

  1. Even if it’s just speculation, I still love your analysis.
    Can’t wait next episode.
This is the first time I watch currently aired drama, and it really kills me!

    • Haha thank you!! I hope my post really made sense, cause it’s really hard to phrase what’s in my mind on this time traveling situation, into a post. Me too, really can’t wait for monday! Really? That must be painful for you, especially with Faith, since every episode leaves you wanting for more, because there are so many questions left unanswered!

  2. This is the BEST theory ever regarding Eun Soo’s time skipping…
    Salute your insight!!
Though it will be lovely to see Gi Chul and Choi young pair up i so dont want any Separation between our couple..
is it too much to ask?/

    • Haha, well, distance makes the heart grow fonder. We’ll have to bear with it. We can’t expect that Young and Eunsoo can be together for the next 8 episodes. Well, i’m sure Young will get Eunsoo back though!

But it really will be absolutely lovely to see Kicheol and Young on the same side:)
Glad you liked my post! It’s a relief to hear that i didn’t confuse you instead!

      • You post made sense..Infact it helped put my theory at ease..
My brain has been buzzing around with the whole time wrap scenario but somehow you got me, just like that JANG!!

Distance is the fodder for the heart is all too okay, YET YET, its CHOI YOUNG we are talking about and him being MR LITERAL[quoting girlfriday] will obviously make things worse..
somehow when it comes to Eun Soo his brain freezes..and the same applies for her, she is MISS ACTION, thinking is something that she often forgets..

        • Surely, she’s gonna pull a mata hari. And from now on, i’m sure we’ll see a lot of Eunsoo risking everything for Young. Gosh, this show is gonna kill me. Hahah thank you for thinking that my analysis is great!!

  3. I got what you were trying to say from your first post but yes, this was more clear. But like you pointed out, we run into holes with our theories. I just think it’s something we can’t figure without more clues.
It’s strange. The story is not the best out there as a whole drama package but the parts that work, work really well. I think it may be due the fact that Song Ji-nah knows where she is going with her story, especially in terms of character development. There’s always something happen within her main characters and it’s not always the obvious, in your face kind of development. So there is a lot joy in rewatching it and see the story with a new light. But of course, this is not going to draw in the viewers in Korea cuz who has the time to do that. So while she is not succeeding in writing a good Korean drama, fit for television sensibility and habits, I still think she is writing a good story overall.

    • Yeah of course they wouldn’t let us have enough clues now, or it wouldn’t be as interesting when we watch it. Totally agreeing with you on that. The parts that work really works well, and all these allows us to just forget that the drama has any flaws. Writer Song certainly knows where the story is going, which is something i’m certainly pleased with because a lot of dramas these days doesn’t have the script fully written before it’s filmed and released… And based on the opinion from publics, they change the direction they were going to… and ultimately, the kinda screw up the beautiful story. Yeah, sigh, but i really enjoy rewatching Faith…. And because i rewatch Faith, i don’t watch any other dramas now… But I’m contented rewatching Faith.

Yeah, Faith will only work for a loyal fan base, sadly, not the general public. I’m just hoping Faith will find its well deserved fame outside of Korea, like in China or Japan (Success in any of these two markets leaves actors contented). Theres pros and cons for us though. We might be a little disappointed for our Faith cast, that Faith ain’t doing well in Korea, but because the ratings is low, we can be sure that there won’t be the huge popularity that spoils the direction of the drama. Since like usually when dramas get too popular, the drama ends with what the general public wants, and not what’s best for the drama. I’m really hoping that Faith will conclude well because the conclusion is the most important part of every show…! *fingers crossed*

  4. Thank you for the elaboration of your thiught process. Out of all kind of speculation out there, your theory sounds to be the one that make most sense. This drama has consumed so much of my attention it’s just nuts. But hey, the love story is just so gorgeous to pass. I, too, agree that I could really care less about the OTP getting it on sexually. The love relationship and the yearning between Them is so strong all they need to do is just look at each other and the world would just melt away. I’m not saying that they should not kiss, it would be a bonus if they do, however their cuddling is just as explosive. Thanks again. I really enjoy reading your postings

    • Haha, yes! I’m glad to see that someone agrees with me on that. Yes all they need is to look at each other, and we feel that they are the only ones in the world. Thanks for enjoying my posts. Really hope you liked it.

  5. I kinda agree with you, that ES went travel time at least couple of time. But hopefuly the serries won’t elaborate as complicated as you explain to us. Just tell us the current time travel, and make it straight to the 1388. Because it will be too saddening for ES to be far away from CY. I want them in the same time line, and not ES jump/ travel forward or backward. CY will have no will to live if ES is not arround!

    • I hope they’d actually explain it, not to the specific details but at least touch on it, cause i am the kind of person wanting a valid reason behind everything. Yes, CY will have no will to live if ES is not around! 😥

  6. hi! your post definitely make sense and make the story even more interesting, but on the bad side, im getting more depressed thinking eun soo had to go forward-backward just to save young. thats a really loooooong way to go. thats why im anxiously waiting for the english version of the book, because we can get explanation about all these things. i have read a bit of excerpts at jooni’s and the writing style reminds me of Audrey Niffenegger with her Time Traveller’s wife (which makes me chill….same topic???)
yes, i also cant forget faith, it lives in me. unlike other drama where the craze decrease over time, faith is
lingering in my mind and heart like a lullaby. the couple is full of chemistry, yup i agree this is the best LMH pairing (it can only be compared by his pairing with son ye jin, the pairing in city hnter really feels way behind….which is ironic because we all know park min young and lee min ho once become off the screen couple). i even avoid watching hollywood love stories because it full of PDA’s and i prefer watching ancient-setting drama such as faith, moon embraces the sun, because the love feels so genuine, gentle, and not complicated by psychological problems faced by modern people.
i heard that our daejang is nominated in Seoul International Drama award, but the site is in Korean so i dont know how to vote for him, anyone willing to share the link?
    this.is.the.best.LMH.drama.so.far.

  7. i wish i can talk to you personally joonni. i love all your Faith reviews. gosh, how can I reach you?
